(AFP): AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has tested positive for the novel coronavirus and is under quarantine, the Serie A club confirmed today (Thursday).
“I tested negative to COVID yesterday and positive today. No symptoms whatsoever. COVID had the courage to challenge me. Bad idea,” Ibrahimovic wrote on Twitter.
Ibrahimovic is self-isolating at home following the test carried out ahead of the team’s Europa League third qualifying round tie against Norwegian club Bodo-Glimt in the San Siro later today (Thursday).
The Serie A side in a statement said, “The club has informed the relevant authorities and the player has been promptly placed in quarantine at home. All other team members and staff have tested negative.”
The second round of tests was carried out after AC Milan’s Brazilian defender Leo Duarte tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday. Ibrahimovic will not only skip today’s game but any Europa League play-offs and the next two Serie A games against Crotone and Spezia.
Ibrahimovic will most likely be available again after the international break for the Milan derby against city rivals Inter on October 17.
Ibrahimovic has scored three goals in Milan’s first two games of the season, including both in their 2-0 win over Bologna in their first Serie A match of the season.
The 38-year-old former Sweden international signed a new one-year deal at the San Siro this summer following his successful return to the club from the LA Galaxy in January.
