KARACHI: Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) staffers on Wednesday demolished seven illegal hydrants located in the Saeedabad area of the metropolis.
Sources said on the directives of MD Water Board Khalid Mahmood Sheikh, KWSB officials dismantled as many as seven illegal water hydrants and suspended connections of the hydrants. Cases were also lodged against four suspects involved in running illegal hydrants.
Sources further sai9d the water board took action against the hydrant mafia in the city, after which theft of millions of gallons of water had been stopped in Baldia Town, Orangi and adjoining areas as illegal hydrants operating there were dismantled and their connections suspended.
The illegal connections, according to the KWSB, had been obtained from a 48-inch-diameter line. The 11 illegal connections were supplying water to various villages in the vicinity.
Water from these illegal connections, according to the water board, used to be stored in RCC tanks from where it was supplied through tankers in various parts of the city.
According to the authorities, many hydrants were being operated illegally by the tanker mafia, who stole water from the main supply lines.
Later, police have registered cases against the accused Abdul Ghaffar, Kamran Afghani, Malik Naveed and Irfan in the concerned police station for stealing and selling water through illegal hydrants.
