NEW DELHI: India’s limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled for June, was officially called off today (Thursday) following the increase in health risk due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to details, both Sri Lankan and Indian cricket board said that the current situation was not feasible for the games to go ahead. A media release from Sri Lanka also confirmed the development.
According to the press release, “The India National Team Tour of Sri Lanka, which was scheduled to take place during the month of June 2020 will not go ahead, as scheduled due to the prevailing circumstances revolving around COVID-19 pandemic.”
India was scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20s starting June end and continuing till July in Sri Lanka. The dates for the matches had not yet been finalised.
Sri Lankan cricket board is seeking the government’s permission to reschedule the tour in August. In the case of rescheduling, the Sri Lankan government will have to take the Indian government in the loop and make sure the safety of visiting players.
International cricket, which has been suspended since March, is returning with England hosting West Indies in a behind-closed-doors Test series.
West Indies have reached England and will stay in the ‘bio-secure’ environment throughout the whole tour. They are scheduled to play the first Test of the three-match series from July 8.
