KARACHI: The supply of water to Karachi was halted for hours following a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The KWSB said that a 72-inch pipeline burst in two different junctions due to the backlog of water as a result of the electricity failure.
According to sources, the damage to the 72-inch-diametre pipeline caused a loss of thousands of gallons of drinking water being supplied to the metropolis.
The impact of the short supply of water would be felt in different areas of the metropolis including, Korangi, Shah Latif Town, Landh, Quaidabad and other parts of the city.
KWSB officials confirmed that the power to the pumping station was resumed within a few hours but the water supply to a large part of the city remained suspended.
Karachi’s overall demand for water is 1.2 billion gallons per day however; it is being supplied less than the demand.
The KWSB said it would take several hours to get the water pumps functional at their normal capacity again. KWSB management has appealed to citizens to use water carefully in times of crisis.
The Dhabeji pumping station, which pumps water to around 70 percent of the city, frequently suffers power breakdowns as a result of which the pipelines burst.
