KHAIRPUR: A nine-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being bitten by a stray dog in Setharja area of Khairpur on Monday.
The victim Mehboob Alam was playing in a street near his home when the dog attacked him. As a result, he suffered severe injuries. He was immediately taken to the nearby hospital for treatment.
According to sources, upon reaching hospital, the family was told that that the hospital has run out of anti-rabies vaccine. The issue of shortage of anti-rabies vaccine emerged in Sindh last year when a ten-year-old, who was bitten by a stray dog, died of rabies in Larkana.
The minor boy identified as Mir Hassan was immediately rushed to a hospital in Shikarpur after a stray dog bit him. However, he was not treated there as there was no vaccine available for rabies.
Hassan was later taken to Larkana’s Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Hospital where the parents were told that the hospital had also run out of the vaccination. Due to not being given the vaccination on time, Mir Hassan succumbed to the disease.
Earlier, a child suffering from rabies after being bitten by a stray dog in Larkana, died on May 6 at the Indus Hospital Karachi.
According to the sources, a nine-years-old Zeeshan was bitten by a stray dog in Larkana on April 8, and his parents brought him to Government Hospital Larkana, where anti-rabies vaccine was not available.
Later, the child was brought to Karachi for treatment. The child breathed his last at Indus Hospital in Karachi.
Earlier, Secretary Local Government Roshan Ali Shaikh had ordered to re-launch the anti-dog bite campaign across Sindh province. Chairing a high level meeting of officials in his office, Roshan ordered to accelerate the anti-dog bite campaign in province.
He said that the lives of people should be protected from the dog bites by proper vaccination and culling and no negligence in this regard would be tolerated, he added.
