ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Saturday announced a six-day holiday for the upcoming Eidul Fitr, starting from May 22 to May 27.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, all markets, public places and other non-essential businesses will remain closed during the Eid holiday amid the COVID-19 epidemic.
Although medical services, essential shops, and other emergency services will continue to remain operational, the notification read.
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has already predicted that Eidul Fitr, which marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramazan, is expected to fall on May 25 in the country.
However, a final decision in this regard will be taken during the meeting of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee which will be held on May 23.
This is the first major religious festival that Muslims will celebrate across the world under the shadow of the coronavirus epidemic.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly all over the world, including Pakistan. According to the latest statistics 4.5 million people have been infected with the virus while more than 306,000 have died since the virus emerged in China in December 2019.
Pakistan’s tally of coronavirus patients stands at 39,738 with at least 866 deaths while almost 10,880 COVID-19 patients have recovered so far.
