ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Prime Minister on National Health Services, Dr. Zafar Mirza has asserted that 79 percent of all coronavirus cases in Pakistan have been locally transmitted.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today (Saturday), Dr. Zafar Mirza has said, “It is now fair to say that our outbreak is now mostly of local transmission,” adding that 21 percent are imported infections.
Referring to the vaccine, Zafar Mirza has clarified that there is no coronavirus vaccine in Pakistan currently and neither is there any work ongoing for its development.
The Special Assistant rejected the media reports that Pakistan was on the verge of developing a vaccine for coronavirus. He said, “Let me clarify that while there are several initiatives to develop vaccines across the world, there is no such initiative in Pakistan at the moment.”
He said, “However a Chinese company contacted a few countries including Pakistan and offered them to become a part of clinical trials.”
The Special Assistant also highlighted that the coronavirus death in Pakistan was constantly increasing. In this regard, he urged the people of Pakistan to take precautionary measures during Ramazan.
He said, “Make your homes your places of worship,” adding, “And if you insist on going to mosques then at least follow the decided 20-point strategy.”
Commenting on the telemedicine portal, he announced that the federal government has launched a telemedicine portal where doctors can give advice to patients regarding the coronavirus.
“The doctors can register for the Covid-19 Telehealth Portal at telehealth.gov.pk,” Dr. Zafar Mirza informed.
Commenting on the statistics, he said the number of confirmed cases has soared to 12,227 across the country. Punjab remains the worst affected province with 5,046 cases.
