ISLAMABAD: There has been a situation of panic among the federal ministries after the release of the sugar and flour report by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
According to details, as per Prime Minister Imran Khan’s directives, an inquiry can be launched against those whose names are listed in the report. A report by the FIA released earlier named top members who earned profit from the recent sugar crisis in the country.
The report over sugar crises showed disappointing performance of the Sugar Advisory Board. Its report also states that some influential people did not allow the Sugar Advisory Board to work.
According to sources, the top officials of the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and other officials did not fulfill their responsibility in the export of sugar. The report also exposed the involvement of politicians, ministers, and officers.
The officers are in fear of an inquiry that might launch against them that will probe the damages caused to gas, electricity and other government institutes.
According to the report, after the ECC allowed the export of sugar, its mill owners earned a double profit by exporting one million tonnes of sugar whereas the wholesale price of sugar was immediately increased from Rs 55 per kg to Rs 71 per kg.
The Ministry of Industry and Production, on the other hand, did not take steps to curb export despite the rising price of the sugar in the local market. The Ministry of Finance also did not take any measures to prevent inflation from rising.
The ECC in this regard also did not take any notice on the increased prices of sugar in the local market. However, key ministers and top officials have expressed serious concerns over the report issued by FIA.
