LAHORE: At least 26 prisoners tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) at Camp Jail in Lahore on Sunday.
According to the provincial health department authorities, as part of precautionary measures, all the prisoners in the jail were screened for coronavirus, adding that 26 of them were diagnosed with the diseases.
Sources said the infected prisoners are still present in the jail, posing threat to other inmates. Sources further said that four of the prisoners were in critical condition.
On the other hand, the Camp Jail superintended said that a report in this regard, has been sent to the Punjab chief minister, Usman Buzdar and home secretary.
On March 20, in the wake of coronavirus epidemic, Islamabad High Court had ordered the release of prisoners with minor crimes.
Punjab remained the worst affected province in the country from the novel coronavirus with 1163 cases, followed by Sindh province that has 840 confirmed cases.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 372 cases followed by 206 and 185 cases in Gilgil Baltistan and Balochistan respectively.
