Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) named opening batsman Tamim Iqbal as new captain of the national one-day (ODI) side, replacing pace bowler Mashrafe Mortaza who stepped down earlier this week.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan announced at a press conference, “The board has unanimously selected Tamim Iqbal as our new ODI captain.”
Nazmul Hassan said, “Board decided against the short-term appointment policy, and we hope that Tamim will serve for the long term.”
In this regard, Tamim Iqbal thanked the board for trusting him for this responsibility and said, “This is a massive honour for me.”
Tamim Iqbal said, “I’m aware that I have huge shoes to fill,” adding that Mashrafe Mortaza has been truly great for Bangladesh and an inspiration model as captain.
Tamim earlier led Bangladesh in three ODIs against Sri Lanka in July last year in the absence of the injured Mashrafe.
His fresh tenure as ODI captain will start with the one-off match against Pakistan on April 1.
Earlier this week, Mashrafe stepped down as ODI captain after the third and final game of a three-match series against Zimbabwe.
