The United States has approved a $686 million upgrade package for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, despite strong objections from India, officials have confirmed.
The programme includes advanced radar systems and avionics upgrades aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of Pakistan’s air force and extending the aircraft’s service life until 2040.
India had raised concerns over the proposed deal and sought to block it.
However, the US State Department said the upgrade would support ongoing counterterrorism efforts and would not alter the military balance in the region.
US officials described the move as a technical and defensive requirement intended to align Pakistan’s capabilities with modern operational standards.
