Messaging platform WhatsApp will discontinue support for older smartphones starting September 8, 2026, affecting users running outdated operating systems.
According to reports, Android devices operating on version 5.0 or earlier will no longer be compatible, with Android 6.0 or newer required to continue using the app.
Several older models are expected to be impacted by the change, including the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, LG G3, and Moto G 1st Gen. On the Apple side, WhatsApp currently requires devices to run iOS 15.1 or later, which may affect older models such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Users are advised to check their device’s software version through system settings and take necessary precautions, including updating their operating system where possible or backing up chat history to avoid data loss.
The decision to end support is driven by security and performance concerns. Older operating systems no longer receive critical updates, making them more vulnerable to cyber threats, while newer app features require advanced hardware and software capabilities.
The move is also aimed at optimizing resources by focusing on devices with a larger active user base.
