LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed her government’s commitment to ensuring the health, welfare and safety of workers across the province, stressing strict enforcement of workplace safety regulations.
In a message issued on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, she underscored the importance of safeguarding both the physical and mental well-being of labourers employed in factories, industrial units and offices.
The chief minister directed the labour department and other relevant authorities to take strict action against violations of workplace safety laws, adding that all industrial and commercial entities must ensure the provision of safety equipment and implementation of protective measures to minimise risks to workers.
She emphasised that strict adherence to safety protocols was essential to protect workers from occupational hazards, noting that “a healthy and सुरक्षित workforce is key to building a strong nation.”
Calling on industrialists to prioritise labour welfare, Ms Nawaz said the provincial government was taking steps to promote a culture of safety at workplaces. She added that amendments to labour laws were being introduced to strengthen employee protection.
Highlighting ongoing welfare initiatives, the chief minister said that around 1.4 million workers were receiving monthly financial assistance through ration cards, while an additional 50,000 factory workers would be brought into the programme during the current fiscal year.
She reiterated that the workforce was a valuable national asset and vowed that no compromise would be made on workers’ health and safety. Companies found neglecting employee welfare, she warned, would face strict penalties, as the government moves to align workplace safety standards with international benchmarks.
