WhatsApp has begun rolling out a long-awaited username feature, allowing users to share contacts without revealing their phone numbers.
This new feature is a major step in enhancing privacy on the popular messaging platform.
The development of WhatsApp usernames started in 2023, with early signs appearing in test builds. According to WABetaInfo, Meta has carefully refined the feature to ensure it is stable, secure, and compatible with all existing WhatsApp functions before wider release.

Currently, the username feature is available to a limited number of users as part of a phased rollout. To check if you have access, open WhatsApp, navigate to Settings, and look for the new Username section. Users can then create a unique WhatsApp username or import an existing one from Facebook or Instagram, simplifying the setup for those already in Meta’s ecosystem.
Once configured, the username can be used as an alternative to sharing phone numbers when exchanging contact information, addressing a long-standing privacy concern. Users can remain discoverable on the platform while keeping their phone numbers private.
Meta has not announced a full public rollout timeline, but the current phased release indicates that broader availability is expected soon, giving millions of users enhanced control over their contact privacy.
