The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has amended regulations for solar net metering and issued a notification stating that existing consumers will retain their agreements and licences for their remaining duration.
According to the notification, current users will continue to be billed under the terms of their existing agreements. However, if a consumer increases or modifies their solar system capacity, the previous tariff will no longer apply.
The amendment will take effect from 9 February 2026.
The notification also noted that NEPRA had earlier replaced the traditional net metering system—based on unit-for-unit exchange—with a net billing mechanism.
Sources added that, on the Prime Minister’s directive, the Power Division instructed NEPRA to maintain the previous policy for existing solar users to prevent any financial disadvantage.
