Pakistan observed “Earth Hour” on Saturday, March 28, 2026, by turning off non-essential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
Under the theme “Give an Hour for Earth,” government buildings, ministries, and citizens are participating to promote energy conservation, environmental protection, and climate awareness.
Shahrah-e-Dastoor and the Red Zone were plunged into complete darkness, while unnecessary lights in all government buildings were switched off.
In addition, unnecessary lights were turned off at the Parliament House, Senate, Presidency, Supreme Court, and the Federal Constitutional Court.
In Rawalpindi and all districts of Punjab, unnecessary lights in government offices were switched off on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Furthermore, in Lahore as well, lights on major roads and in government buildings were turned off.
According to a spokesperson for the Punjab government, lights were switched off at more than 500 locations across the province, including commissioner and deputy commissioner offices and other departments.
On main roads in major cities, streetlights, private buildings, and the amphitheater in Murree went dark, with candles lit instead.
Moreover, in all small and large cities of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, lights were also turned off for one hour in observance of World Earth Day.
Pakistan joins over 190 countries in this World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) initiative, which is observed on the last Saturday of March.
