Various parts of Karachi are set to face a daily water shortfall of around 200 million gallons for four consecutive days as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) undertakes emergency repairs on a major water supply line starting Monday noon.
As per KWSC spokesperson, leakage has been identified in the 84-inch diameter Phase-I main water pipeline located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 19. In response, the corporation has decided to carry out urgent repair work to address the leakage and stabilize the city’s water supply system, especially ahead of Ramadan.
The repair work will formally begin at 12 noon on Monday and is expected to take up to 96 hours to complete. Specialised technical teams will remain on-site throughout the operation to ensure timely completion.
To facilitate the repairs, water supply from the Dhabeji pumping station will be temporarily curtailed, leading to a daily shortfall of approximately 200 million gallons. Karachi currently receives about 650 million gallons per day (MGD), but supply will drop to nearly 450 MGD during the repair period.
The spokesperson clarified that water supply from Hub, Gharo, and other pumping stations will continue uninterrupted. However, several areas, including Clifton, DHA, Korangi, Malir, Landhi, Shah Faisal, Gulshan, Jinnah, Chanesar, Saddar, and Lyari, are expected to experience disruptions. The Landhi and Sherpao hydrants will also remain closed.
KWSC assured that once repairs are completed, the city’s water transmission system will improve and persistent leakage issues will be resolved. Residents have been urged to use water sparingly during the repair period.
