Tomato prices soared in Lahore as the vegetable is now being sold at 250 rupees per kilogram, far above the official rate of 130 rupees.
According to reports, shopkeepers claim that the wholesale market is supplying tomatoes at higher prices, forcing them to raise rates for consumers.
On the other hand, buyers are urging the relevant authorities to take strict action against those selling tomatoes above the official price.
Last month, the price of tomato hit a record high in Karachi and reached Rs500 to 700 per kilogram.
It is worth mentioning that the price of tomatoes in Pakistan is currently fluctuating, with reports indicating retail prices ranging from approximately PKR 230 to over PKR 400 per kilogram due to factors like the closure of the Pak-Afghan border.
Some sources list lower prices, but the recent surge is significantly impacting consumers and the market, with wholesalers mentioning retail rates being more than double the wholesale price, which is between PKR 250 and PKR 300 per kg.
