Social media platform X has introduced new messaging service “Chat” that includes encrypted messages like Signal or Meta’s WhatsApp, file sharing and vanishing messages.
With this new update, users can not only send and receive messages but also make voice and video calls, share files and edit or delete previously sent messages.
Several advanced privacy tools have been added as well, including end-to-end encryption and improved notifications. For now, the feature is available on iOS and the web, while the Android version will roll out soon.
The company has also announced that a voice memo option will be introduced later, allowing users to send short audio messages.
X had been teasing its new chat tools for months. Earlier this year, the platform launched an initial version of encrypted messaging, but technical issues forced the company to pause it in May. The latest update appears to remove many of those early limitations. Group messages and media files can now be encrypted, although metadata, such as information about who a message is being sent to, remains unencrypted.

The company has clarified that users are still not fully protected from “man-in-the-middle” attacks, which could compromise the security of encrypted chats. If an internal employee or a legally authorized party accesses a chat, users will not receive any notification. To address this, X is developing tools that will allow users to verify the authenticity of their encrypted messages.
This update brings X’s chat platform closer to the standards of major messaging apps, offering users greater freedom, privacy and modern features. However, the company is still working on certain security gaps to ensure fully protected chats in the future.
