Thousands of students in government schools across Punjab will not sit for their first-term examinations as originally planned, the School Education Department has announced.
The decision comes in response to the recent floods and subsequent delays in reopening schools, which have disrupted the academic calendar.
Originally scheduled to begin on October 15, the first-term exams have now been postponed to the first week of December. These will now be held alongside mid-term examinations, effectively merging the two assessment periods.
The delay has sparked concern among parents, many of whom believe that timely assessments are crucial for maintaining academic consistency and reducing stress on students. Reports also suggest that many children are disappointed by the sudden change.
On Saturday, Punjab University (PU) has suspended all ongoing and upcoming examinations with immediate effect. The move, described as sudden and unprecedented, was announced via an urgent circular issued by the university administration on Saturday.
The suspension affects a wide range of programs, including BA/BSc, BS (Hons), MA/MSc, MPhil, and PhD, as well as supplementary and practical exams. All departments, affiliated colleges, and examination centers have been directed to halt examination activities until further notice.
