ISLAMABAD: Residents of the capital are bracing for higher utility costs as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved a proposal to increase water supply and sanitation charges for households.
Currently, water charges are set at Rs280 per month for a 10-marla house and Rs192 per month for a 5-marla house. Under the new plan, the minimum monthly bill could rise to Rs500 for a 5-marla house, marking a significant jump in costs for citizens.
CDA officials explained that the revision is necessary due to a severe financial shortfall. The authority’s annual income stands at just Rs4 million, while yearly expenses have soared past Rs4 billion.
To reduce this deficit, the CDA is also considering switching from the current system to a monthly billing cycle for water and sewerage services.
The last tariff revision was carried out in 2017–18, making this the first proposed hike in several years.
To seek public feedback, the CDA has scheduled a public hearing on September 3 at the Convention Centre, Islamabad, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents have been urged to attend, voice their concerns, and share suggestions. A formal notice regarding the hearing has been issued by the CDA Water Directorate.
