Over the past year, the continuous aggression, bombing, and bloodshed unleashed by Israel on Gaza since October 7th have left the region in extreme turmoil. The major issue is that the conflict between Hamas and Israel, sometimes portrayed as an issue of the Muslim Ummah, other times as a dispute between two parties, and occasionally as a human rights matter, can engulf the region at any time like a wildfire.
Recently, on January 2nd, the Deputy Chief of Hamas’s Political Bureau, along with five other Hamas members, was martyred after infiltrating Lebanon. This incident marks the first attack by the Zionist state on Lebanon since 2006. In the past days, Israeli forces continued their series of bombings in residential areas of Gaza, resulting in the martyrdom of more than 120 Palestinians in just 24 hours.
During this time, an Israeli civilian was also killed in the course of Israeli military action. As a result, the number of martyred Palestinians has exceeded 22,637 by January 4th, while more than 57,296 individuals, including over 9,100 children and more than 6,500 women, have been injured.
Among the injured Palestinians, 6,327 are women and 8,663 are children. Due to the continuous targeting of hospitals by the Israeli forces, medical facilities have almost collapsed, exacerbating the critical condition of the wounded and leading to a further escalation of casualties. The destruction and devastation of buildings in Gaza are another significant concern.
As a consequence of the destruction of buildings, more than 85% of Gaza’s population is now homeless, without shelter, and reluctant to seek refuge in countries like Egypt. Israel aims to force them out of Gaza, while the recent statement by the United States also questions Israel’s actions.
Two Israeli ministers had previously discussed the possibility of forcibly displacing Palestinians, but the U.S. State Department spokesman rejected this idea, emphasizing that Palestinian land will remain for Palestinians. The Israeli Prime Minister also affirmed this, dismissing the irresponsible statements of Israeli ministers regarding the forced displacement of Palestinians.
Any country, including the United States and Russia, spreading Israel’s war, may not necessarily lead to the initiation of a third world war. However, Israel’s aggression and attacks on various Muslim countries, with the significant alliance of Russia and China through Iran, could potentially contribute to a major conflict in the region. Recent provocations from Israel and the retaliation announced by Iran indicate that any attack by Iran on Israel could further destabilize the situation in the region.
On a global scale, the price of oil has increased by up to 3% in the past 24 hours, indicating further turmoil in the already fragile global economy. In such a scenario, a country like Pakistan, which has already faced the challenges of default and is currently navigating through the International Monetary Fund’s conditions to support its struggling economy, needs a well-thought-out plan for the future in these critical circumstances.
When some analysts and YouTubers talk about the possibility of a third world war, it is essential to note the specific precautions needed, considering the disastrous consequences of the first and second world wars. These wars witnessed millions of deaths globally, and the financial losses incurred have yet to be fully overcome by the international community.
If we specifically consider the Second World War, it profoundly affected regions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, involving numerous countries. Our current identity, society, and way of living, as well as the diverse perspectives of individuals residing in different regions of the world, have been shaped by the aftermath of those wars. The occupied regions like Kashmir and Palestine, however, have not yet achieved the promised freedom, partly due to the lack of resistance from key members of the international community, including some ICC member states.
It is evident that just observing, talking, and discussing factors such as sitting, talking, and getting up cannot lead to a solution. The global fraternity needs to unite, align its stance, and awaken the conscience of the world’s justice advocates to take effective action in favor of Gaza.
Indeed, a united political and diplomatic effort should be pursued, leading to an impactful voice for Gaza’s rights. Certainly, taking such a crucial step will also contribute to improving the overall situation in the region.
