The Punjab government has decided to implement an annual premium deduction from the salaries of its employees under the health insurance program.
The decision was taken back in October, after which the health department had written to the finance department in this regard. The provincial cabinet has now approved the salary deduction.
Effective January 1, 2024, Rs4,350 will be deducted annually from the salary of every government employee as their contribution to the health insurance program. This deduction will apply to all employees, including those where both spouses are government employees.
In cases where couples serve as government employees, the deduction will be applied to the salary of one spouse only.
The decision to deduct a premium from salaries has been approved, said Finance Secretary Mujahid Sherdil. He confirmed that the deductions will commence from January 1, 2024, onwards.
This move marks a significant step towards providing healthcare coverage to government employees and their families. The health insurance program is expected to offer comprehensive medical benefits and alleviate the financial burden associated with healthcare costs.
While the implementation of the program has been welcomed by many, some concerns have been raised regarding the affordability of the premium for lower-income employees. However, the government has assured that various measures will be taken to ensure the program is accessible and beneficial to all its employees.
