“My freedom lives in these pages, and I hope that my words can inspire others to take back their happiness and their identity,” Megan Fox said of her poetry book.
Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, out now, comes after years of suppressing her voice as not to upset the men in her life, the 37-year-old Jennifer’s Body actress writes in the 159-page book’s reader letter. She lays bare her experiences, delving into topics such as relationship abuse and pregnancy loss. She also shares her thoughts on her tumultuous relationship with “twin flame” Machine Gun Kelly, likening their romance to a “tsunami.”
Fox, who is a mother of three from her previous marriage to Brian Austin Green, articulates how she has always been deeply in touch with her emotions but, historically, felt unable to express them because it made the men who loved her feel intimidated, inadequate, and insecure.
She describes her lifelong effort to make herself small to boost others’ confidence, portraying herself as a “sacrificial lamb” for any “beautiful, broken, self-absorbed idiot” who pursued her, draining her vitality. The book’s 77 poems give voice to previously unspoken feelings of isolation, torment, self-harm, desperation, longing, restlessness, rage, and general anguish, triggered by the breaking point she reached with one such “idiot.”

While Fox’s list of exes is not extensive, including relationships with her Transformers co-star Shia LaBeouf and 7th Heaven actor David Gallagher (she identifies as bisexual), readers can expect significant social media speculation about the identities behind her poems. Fox has mentioned that some of the poems are literal, while other parts are allegorical.
Fox writes that her book, illustrated by Audrey Kawasaki, is for anyone who has given more than they’ve received or for those who struggle to believe they deserve to be heard. She emphasizes that the book is also for herself, as she believes she deserves better.
