WASHINGTON: A committee of the US Senate has urged the Pakistani government to restore internet services across the country and de-escalate tensions immediately.
The committee, which plays a key role in shaping US foreign policies and allocating funds for their implementation, also has the power to approve or reject all diplomatic appointments.
This development comes as the US State Department briefing drew attention to Pakistan’s measures of shutting down social media platforms like Twitter. Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized that access to information and diverse ideas is crucial for a prosperous and democratic society. He further stated that internet access connects the public to the information they need to make informed decisions, hold government officials accountable, and exercise their freedom of expression.

In a statement posted on its official social media accounts, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee stated that it was closely monitoring the developments in Pakistan, which it described as “concerning.”

The committee’s chairman, Senator Bob Menendez, supported de-escalation efforts and called for the immediate restoration of public access to internet services. He emphasized that the shutdowns dangerously suppress the Pakistani people’s freedoms, including access to information.
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s statement adds to the growing international pressure on Pakistan to restore internet services and respect the fundamental rights of its citizens. It remains to be seen how the Pakistani government will respond to these calls for action.
