ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Umar Ata Bandial’s bench has been delisted today, causing the removal of all scheduled cases before the bench. The reason behind the delisting is the Chief Justice’s indisposition, according to a statement released by the Supreme Court’s PRO.

This move comes as the Supreme Court’s deadline for updating it on the negotiations among political parties to finalize a mutually acceptable date for holding elections in Punjab ends today.

Separate meetings of the federal cabinet, PML-N’s parliamentary party, and allied ruling parties have been scheduled, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presiding over the meetings.
It may be added here that the meeting of coalition parties will be held this afternoon at the Prime Minister’s House, while the meeting of the parliamentary party has also been called for today.
In addition to the delisting of the Chief Justice’s bench, bench number two of the Supreme Court, consisting of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Shahid Waheed, has also had its cause list canceled. However, a new bench comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Aminuddin Khan has been formed to hear all the cases that were previously scheduled before bench number two.
According to the preliminary cause list, 12 cases were scheduled for hearing before the delisted bench today.
The sudden decision has left many lawyers and litigants bewildered and uncertain about the fate of their cases.
