LAHORE: The joint opposition in the Punjab Assembly seems to have thrown away the burden of showing its numerical strength in the house and has withdrawn the no-confidence motion, submitted in Punjab Assembly against Pervaiz Elahi.

PMLN leader Tahir Khalil Sindhu claimed that since Pervaiz Elahi had already been denotified by Governor for failing to take vote of confidence, there was no need remaining to continue with the no-trust move submitted by the joint opposition.

The chief minister needs the the total strength of 186 in the House of 371to show majority and thwart PML-N’s attempt to remove him from the office. The PTI-PML-Q alliance has a total of 190 votes (180 + 10).
On the other hand, the opposition alliance has the support of 180 lawmakers, including 167 from the PML-N, seven from the PPP, five independent lawmakers, and one from the Rah-i-Haq Party, and it was in no position to buy some votes after Supreme Court’s decision about turncoats.

Earlier on Monday, Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman had asked Mr Elahi to seek a vote of confidence from the assembly on Dec 21. In an order, shared by the PML-N on Twitter, the governor said the chief minister had “lost the confidence of his party president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and members of his own party belonging to the PML-Q”. This needed Pervaiz Elahi to prove that he enjoyed support of 186 members, thus providing relief to the numerically weaker joint opposition.
