WASHIGNTON: A US Senator has denied role of his government in overthrowing the Imran Khan-led regime in Pakistan.
Speaking at an event in the American state of Maryland, Senator Chris Van Halen said that the accusation of US interference in overthrowing Imran’s government is wrong, aside from making claims in the elections, but there is no truth in such allegations, he has also been working with the previous Pakistani government.
He said the US was not involved in Pakistani politics in terms of deciding who should be in the government, adding that this was the business of the people of Pakistan to decide who should rule them.
He also said “I worked with former Pakistani prime minister on many issues including stronger US-Pakistan relationship but I would say that his claim that US engineered his removal is not true.”
Referring to recent remarks by President Joe Biden about Pakistan’s nuclear program, Democratic Party Senator Chris Van said US policy towards Pakistan remained unchanged, and clarified that Biden’s statement was not intended to impact the bilateral ties between the two countries.
He said “I don’t know what made President Biden say [what he said about Pakistan], but I don’t believe this was intended to hurt US-Pakistan relations in any way.”
He said his [Biden’s] statement was spontaneous and that there was no shift in US policy towards Pakistan, adding that “the United States does have confidence in Pakistan over the security of its nuclear arsenal.”
