KARACHI: Heirs of National Assembly member and well-known TV host Aamir Liaquat have reached the city court for permission for the last rites as police have denied handing over the body.
The police chief had stopped the funeral and funeral prayers of Liaquat without an autopsy. SSP East Rahim Shirazi said that burial would not be allowed without a postmortem of Aamir Liaquat for which family members were also being contacted.
The police had also informed Chhipa about the matter in a letter and Aamir Liaquat’s body was not handed over to his heirs. Police are of the view that post-mortem is mandatory in all cases after the proceedings of 174, only a court order can stop the post-mortem.
It may be recalled that a series of talks with the police had started on the arrival of both the children of Aamir Liaquat at the morgue which failed. On the other hand, his ex-wife, son, and daughter have reached City Court on the issue of the burial of Aamir Liaquat while SSP East and SHO Police Brigade have reached City Court.
Police officers are likely to file a petition seeking court orders for extradition, however, the court concerned has been closed due to Friday, while the court staff has also left the court.

It is to be noted that the police officials say that we have not stopped the body of Aamir Liaquat from burial, we have said that the body should be taken away with the permission of the court.
According to the police, the body is not legally handed over without the action of section 174, the competent court has directed not to take such action. Heirs can get permission by informing the court about the decision, without which it is not possible for the police to hand over the body.
