Inflation exceeds 19% on an annual basis in country

KARACHI: Prices of 16 essential commodities have risen in recent weeks, with a slight decline of 0.43 percent in the country’s weekly inflation rate while inflation remained unchanged at 19.82 percent on an annual basis.

On a weekly basis, onions became 14.65 percent, matches 1.14 percent, firewood 1.30 percent more expensive while chicken 3.40 percent, eggs 2.99 percent, and tomatoes 1.26 percent, according to a weekly report released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics. Potatoes became cheaper by 1.65 percent, sugar by 0.17 percent, and flour by 0.61 percent. 

The data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) shows that during the week ended January 13, 2022, in terms of sensitive price decimals, the inflation rate declined by 0.43 percent during the previous week but the annual inflation rate was 19.82.

According to the report, for those who earn up to Rs 17,732 per month on an annual basis in terms of sensitive price index during the last week, the inflation rate is 20.89 percent for those earning Rs 17,733 to Rs 22,888 per month. 19.04 percent in the rate of inflation for the class, 17.93 percent in the rate of inflation for the class having monthly income from Rs. 22,889 to Rs. 29,517, Rs. 29,518 to Rs. 44,175 per month Inflation stood at 17.72 percent, while for those earning more than Rs 44,176 per month, the inflation rate stood at 20.10 percent.

The data further states that the 16 essential commodities that have gone up in price during the last week include winter firewood, matches, sugar, jaggery, beef, pulses, and onions among others. 

According to the statistics, the prices of 9 essential commodities which have declined during the last week include potatoes, tomatoes, sugar, garlic, LPG, eggs, chicken, and flour. However, prices of 26 essential commodities remained stable.
