ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reiterated government’s commitment to the welfare of overseas Pakistanis, stating that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was leading in the relief and rescue of Pakistanis in Sudan.
In a press statement on Tuesday, he announced that another convoy of 211 Pakistanis had arrived in Port Sudan, bringing the total number of evacuated Pakistanis to 700.
He said “Ambassador Meer Bahrose Regi’s team in Khartoum and Port Sudan are working day and night to facilitate the stay of Pakistanis who are still in Sudan until their evacuation to Pakistan.”
The foreign minister also appreciated the hard work of Pakistan missions in the region and the entire foreign office team led by foreign secretary Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, who was leading the inter-agency coordination process.
Furthermore, the foreign minister highlighted that the government was engaged with friendly countries in the region, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to facilitate the evacuation process. The government is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all overseas Pakistanis, and will continue to work tirelessly to bring them home safely.
It may be added here that the death toll in Sudan stands at about 420, including 264 civilians in the military clashes between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. Several ceasefires have collapsed and the latest one took hold at midnight on 24 April.
