Pakistan facilitates handover of crew from US-seized Iranian vessel

ISLAMABAD: Iranian authorities are reported to have taken custody of crew members who were previously held by United States forces, officials confirmed the other day.

The crew members, who were part of the personnel aboard the Iranian-flagged container ship M/V Touska, were transferred to Pakistan following their release by American authorities. According to the Foreign Office, the sailors were flown into Pakistan and subsequently handed over to Iranian officials under arrangements coordinated between the three countries.

The vessel itself had been seized by US forces last month in the Gulf of Oman.

According to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the ship was intercepted and boarded after it allegedly failed to comply with repeated warnings and attempted to breach a naval blockade enforced by Washington on Iranian ports. Tehran had previously condemned the seizure as an act of “piracy” and a violation of international maritime norms, while the US maintained the action was necessary to enforce sanctions and security protocols in the strategic waterway.

Officials in Islamabad described the transfer of the 22 crew members as a “confidence-building measure,” aimed at facilitating cooperation and providing a de-escalatory path during a period of heightened friction between Washington and Tehran. While the number of crew members and the specific logistics of the handover were not disclosed in detail, the move is being viewed by regional analysts as a calculated step to keep diplomatic channels open.

This development comes at a time when Pakistan has actively maintained engagement with both Tehran and Washington, attempting to navigate a delicate diplomatic landscape. By positioning itself as a facilitator, Islamabad has sought to encourage dialogue and prevent further military escalation in the region, particularly around the volatile Strait of Hormuz.

There was no immediate comment from US authorities regarding the broader implications of the transfer, though CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins previously confirmed that the repatriation process was being coordinated in tandem with the support of both sides.

Middle East observers believe the release of the crew is expected to provide some relief to the immediate standoff, although broader tensions regarding maritime traffic, sanctions, and regional security remain unresolved.
