KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is reported to have received official approval from the Commissioner of Karachi to establish cattle markets at five strategic locations throughout the city.
The notification marks the first phase of a broader initiative to decentralize animal trading hubs and reduce congestion in residential areas.
The approved sites for the new markets include North Karachi’s Sunday Bazaar, KMC Ground, Safari Park, and two designated blocks in Gulistan-e-Jauhar (Blocks 5 and 6). Additionally, the Commissioner’s order specifies the utilization of Lyari’s Bakra Pedi and select vacant plots in Korangi for these operations.
These locations were selected following a review of KMC’s initial proposal, which had sought permission for 11 sites; the final approval covers five key zones to ensure better regulatory oversight and logistical efficiency.
This development complements the existing annual cattle market at Northern Bypass, which remains the city’s largest hub, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and traders during festive seasons.
The new markets aim to alleviate pressure on the Northern Bypass site while providing residents with more accessible options for livestock purchases year-round. Authorities have indicated that strict hygiene and safety protocols will be enforced at all five new locations to maintain public health standards.
