KARACHI: Karachi and all major cities of Sindh are bracing for an intensifying heat wave, with temperatures already soaring above normal. The worst is yet to come: from today, May 2, the heat will escalate, peaking over the next 3 to 5 days.
According to information available with MM News, the actual temperature in Karachi is expected to remain between 38°C to 42°C. However, due to high humidity, UV index, and CAPE index, the “feels like” temperature may go up to 44°C to 50°C, while in some areas it may even reach 51°C.
However, Karachi may experience slight improvement in weather conditions after 4 to 5 PM today, with marginal reduction in heat intensity. Hyderabad and other interior areas of Sindh may also see some relief in the evening and night hours due to the indirect effect of winds.
A change in wind direction is expected from Sunday or Monday, where the winds coming from the sea will decrease and blow from the north, making the weather drier and more severe. There is no possibility of rain in the city during this period.
Met experts have urged upon all citizens are strongly advised to take this situation seriously and adopt precautionary measures. Avoid outdoor exposure, especially between 11 AM and 4 PM. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty, and avoid caffeine and alcohol.
Besides these, citizens have also been advised to protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. Use cooling measures like wet cloths, fans, or air conditioners, and wear light, loose clothing. Be vigilant for heatstroke symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, or fainting, and seek shade or medical help immediately if experienced.
