Electricity prices in Pakistan are likely to rise as the Central Power Purchasing Agency has filed a request for 26 paisa per unit increase with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.
According to reports, the proposed hike has been sought under the monthly fuel adjustment for March.
Data from CPPA shows that a total of 8.939 billion units of electricity were generated during March, while 8.644 billion units were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs).
The reference cost of electricity for March was set at Rs 7.99 per unit, according to CPPA.
A breakdown of power generation sources reveals that 23.55% of electricity was produced from hydropower and 16.76% from local coal.
Moreover, 13.80% came from imported coal and 5.64% from imported LNG, while 1.02% was generated from furnace oil and 11.34% from local gas. Furthermore, 21.95% of electricity was produced using nuclear fuel.
Wind accounted for 3.46% of generation, while solar contributed 1.18%. The request states that the proposed increase will also apply to consumers of K-Electric.
A final decision on electricity tariffs will be announced after NEPRA’s hearing.
