GUJRANWALA: At least five people were killed in separate violent incidents across Gujranwala on Monday, underscoring a sharp deterioration in law-and-order that stands in stark contrast to the provincial government’s “Safe Punjab” slogan.
A horrific attack in Rehmatpura, under the jurisdiction of Gurjakh police station, left the neighbourhood shaken after unknown assailants forcefully entered a home and fatally stabbed a mother and her young daughter. The victims were identified as 34-year-old Nida Mustafa and her three-year-old child. Both succumbed to multiple stab wounds at the scene, according to police sources. A surviving four‑year‑old child, who witnesses say was present during the assault, is now the sole eyewitness to the massacre and is being supported by relatives and investigators.
Other fatal incidents across the city
– Jinnah Road police district: A husband allegedly murdered his wife in an apparent domestic dispute; the suspect fled the scene and police have registered a first information report.
– Ferozewala police district: A 45‑year‑old man was found dead; initial reports indicate the victim sustained fatal injuries consistent with a targeted killing.
– Afzal Pura, Gujarkhan police district: A young man was shot dead; witnesses reported that the assailants escaped immediately after the shooting.
Police response and investigation
Local police confirmed multiple murder cases have been registered and say teams have been formed to investigate each incident. Officers stated that suspects in the various killings remain at large and appealed to residents with any information to come forward. Authorities have not yet provided details on motives or possible links between the attacks.
Public reaction and safety concerns
The spate of killings has inflamed public anxiety in Gujranwala, where residents described fear and anger over the apparent impunity of the attackers. Community members and local leaders criticized the provincial administration’s assurances about public safety, saying that the recent violence—especially the brutal Rehmatpura double murder—reveals systemic gaps in policing and crime prevention.
Meanwhile, investigations remain ongoing. Police say forensic teams and investigators are examining the Rehmatpura crime scene and are pursuing leads in the other cases. No arrests have been publicly announced.
