Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet has approved the regulated export of donkey meat and hides from Gwadar.
According to an official statement, the meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, where the committee authorised the sale of the existing stock of donkey meat and hides from Gwadar for export in accordance with applicable rules.
Separately, data from the Agriculture Census Report showed significant regional variation in donkey populations across the country.
Punjab recorded the highest number, followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Balochistan reported the lowest.
According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24 and 2024–25 reports, Pakistan’s donkey population has reached an estimated 5.9 million to 6.047 million, consistently ranking as the third largest in the world.
The population is rising, with Punjab leading (2.4 million+), followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
