LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has declared all unauthorised photography, videography and news gathering on its premises a punishable offence, days after videos showing derailments and detached bogies went viral on social media and triggered severe public criticism of the department.

In a notification issued to all divisions, railway authorities imposed a complete ban on recording within railway premises and barred entry to stations and installations without prior permission.

The move comes as the department has faced mounting backlash in recent months over a series of incidents, including coaches derailing and wagons becoming detached mid-journey, footage of which was widely shared online.

According to the new guidelines, railway stations, platforms and yards have been declared “sensitive” areas. Entry onto platforms will now be allowed only with a valid travel ticket or platform ticket. Access to engines, brake vans and operational sections has been restricted to authorised staff only. Crossing railway yards and tracks has also been declared a crime.
The rules apply to journalists, vloggers, bloggers and the general public. “Any kind of recording and publication is strictly prohibited without written permission,” the notification said. It warned that violators would face legal and departmental action.

Obtaining formal permission before conducting any activity within railway premises has been made mandatory. The department said the measures were taken for the “protection of national assets” and that security had been tightened at stations. The entry of “unrelated individuals” has been banned.
The notification stressed compliance with railway rules by the public and social media users, stating that violation of the new guidelines had been “declared punishable”.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Railways has been under severe criticism and scrutiny following multiple incidents over the past few months after videos purporting to show criminal negligence, including detached coaches and derailed trains, circulated extensively on social media, prompting criticism from commuters and opposition parties.
The department is headed by Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi of the PML-N. Abbasi’s victory in the 2024 general elections remains contested by rival parties, who have alleged irregularities in the results.

Railway officials did not provide details on the procedure or timeframe for obtaining permission for media coverage under the new policy.
