A polyglot performer, Akhtar was fluent in English, Bengali, Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto, Gujarati and Urdu — an ability that broadened his appeal and enabled him to craft characters with linguistic and cultural nuance. He often cited the actor Lehri as an early inspiration.
The Government of Pakistan recognized his contributions to the arts with several honors, including the Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1996, among other accolades.
