Tensions between the United States and Iran appear to be escalating, with reports suggesting a potential crackdown on Iranian-linked commercial shipping in the coming days.
The risk of action against Iranian commercial vessels has increased amid growing friction between Washington and Tehran. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the United States is preparing to seize ships associated with Iran.
Citing US officials, the report said the American military has finalized plans to take control of Iranian-linked oil tankers and other vessels in the near future.
The move is reportedly aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran as part of broader strategic efforts.
In response, Iran issued a strong warning. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament and a senior negotiator, said Iran maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz and described any attempt to blockade Iranian ports as a “reckless and ignorant decision.”
He stressed that it would be unacceptable for other countries’ ships to pass through the vital waterway while Iranian vessels are restricted. Ghalibaf also warned that if even a single US minesweeper advanced further, Iran would respond with direct fire, adding that this stance has already been conveyed clearly to the American side.
The developments come amid expectations of possible US-Iran talks in Islamabad, where diplomatic efforts may seek to ease rising tensions.
