Oil smashes $100 and Asian markets slide as Trump orders Hormuz blockade

SINGAPORE: The global economy shifted into a state of high alert on Monday, April 13, 2026, as oil prices surged past the $100 threshold following President Trump’s announcement of a U.S. Navy blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

The directive, set to take effect at 10 a.m. ET today, comes in the wake of a total collapse in U.S.-Iran peace talks in Islamabad, where negotiations reportedly stalled over Iran’s nuclear demands. In response, Tehran has labeled the move a violation of international ceasefire agreements, a declaration that has heightened global anxiety regarding potential retaliatory strikes on regional energy infrastructure.

Energy markets reacted with immediate volatility during early trade.

WTI crude jumped 9 percent to reach $105.30 per barrel, while Brent crude climbed 8.55 percent to $103.30. The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be overstated, as it handles approximately 20 percent of global oil exports.

Analysts warn that the blockade could effectively remove between 1.5 and 1.7 million barrels per day of Iranian supply from a market already tightened by previous Saudi production cuts.

The shockwaves from the Middle East reached equity markets instantly, triggering a broad sell-off across the globe. U.S. futures tumbled overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropping 517 points, or 1.3 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.

Asian markets mirrored this distress during Monday’s session, as the MSCI index for emerging Asia plummeted. The region’s heavy reliance on oil imports made it particularly sensitive to the spike in energy costs, leading to widespread declines across major Asian exchanges.

In Europe, the energy crisis was further compounded as natural gas futures leaped 17 percent. Amid the turmoil, the U.S. dollar strengthened significantly as investors fled to safe-haven assets, leaving risk-sensitive currencies like the Australian dollar to face substantial downward pressure.
