In response to declining admissions in private medical and dental colleges across Pakistan, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has temporarily relaxed merit requirements to ensure vacant seats are filled while maintaining transparency and merit-based admissions.
In Lahore and other parts of the country, several seats remained unfilled due to reduced admissions in private medical colleges. To address this, the PMDC made a key decision to ease the admission policy.
Under the new decision, the MBBS merit threshold has been lowered from 55% to 52%, while the BDS merit requirement has been reduced from 50% to 47%. An official notification regarding this change has also been issued.
According to the PMDC, this reduction in merit will apply only to vacant seats and is a temporary measure; it will not be adopted as a permanent policy.
Private medical and dental colleges have also been advised to consider reducing their fees. Furthermore, all admissions must continue to be conducted based on merit and transparency, with strict oversight of the admission process ensured.
