SINGAPORE/RIYADH: Saudi Aramco has raised its official selling prices for crude oil to Asia to a record-breaking premium for May, as the deepening geopolitical conflict in the Middle East continues to upend global energy flows and disrupt traditional maritime trade routes.
The state-owned oil giant notified customers in the region that it has increased the premium for its flagship Arab Light crude to $19.50 a barrel above the regional benchmark, marking the single largest price hike in the company’s history, a move reflecting the extreme scarcity of supply following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption normally passes.
Market analysts say the unprecedented pricing power demonstrated by Aramco stems from its unique ability to bypass the current naval blockades. While other regional producers remain largely paralyzed by the maritime restrictions, Saudi Arabia has successfully rerouted significant volumes of its export capacity through the East-West Pipeline. This infrastructure allows the kingdom to transport crude across its interior to Red Sea terminals, maintaining a vital link to Asian and European markets even as regional tensions escalate.
The price surge has sent shockwaves through Asian refineries, particularly in China and India, which are now facing the highest input costs for Middle Eastern crude on record. The hike comes despite recent pledges from the OPEC+ alliance to boost output, a commitment that has been largely nullified by the physical inability of many member states to ship their oil safely through contested waters.
As the conflict shows no signs of immediate de-escalation, global energy markets are increasingly pricing in a long-term shift in oil logistics. Saudi Aramco’s dominance in this high-risk environment has turned it into the primary price setter for the global economy, as traders and nations scramble to secure guaranteed deliveries regardless of the historic premiums being demanded.
