During the current fiscal year, from July to December, the Government of Pakistan paid more than Rs5.3 trillion in interest on debt.
According to official documents, outstanding interest payments stood at Rs8.9 trillion by June 2025, which declined to Rs3.6 trillion by December.
The documents show that Rs8.207 trillion had been allocated for interest payments in the current fiscal year.
Pakistan’s total debt has reached Rs81.4 trillion, including Rs26 trillion in external debt and Rs55 trillion in domestic debt.
The remaining Rs2.9 trillion in interest payments is due by June.
Official data further indicates that interest payments account for 46.7 per cent of the national budget, while Pakistan’s total debt has reached 70.7 per cent of its GDP.
