American international relations expert John Mearsheimer has claimed that if a Nuremberg-style tribunal were held, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could face the death penalty over alleged war crimes.
In a social media post, John Mearsheimer stated that if proceedings similar to the Nuremberg Trials were conducted, both leaders and several of their advisers could be sentenced to death.
He noted that during the original Nuremberg Trials, former Nazi German leaders were prosecuted and punished for genocide and aggressive warfare.
Mearsheimer further alleged that the United States and Israel carried out two unjustified attacks on Iran, including one in June 2025 and ongoing military actions, without any legitimate military provocation.
He also claimed that both countries were involved in the unlawful killing of Iranian leaders and waged what he described as a genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.
According to him, since 28 February, US and Israeli operations have targeted senior Iranian officials and commanders, as well as energy facilities and civilian infrastructure.
He added that hundreds of civilians have been killed in these actions, while Iran’s armed forces have responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli-held areas and US military assets in the region.
