Well-known urologist Dr Asif Malik was seriously injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on him in the University Town area of Peshawar on Tuesday night, according to hospital and police officials.
According to the Young Doctors Association, Dr Malik was attacked while returning home. His driver rushed him to the hospital, where he was able to walk into the emergency department himself, indicating his condition was satisfactory.
He was immediately shifted to Peshawar General Hospital, where he remains under treatment in the intensive care unit.
Police said three empty pistol shells were recovered from near his residence, and a case has been registered.
Authorities are collecting CCTV footage and have formed teams to trace and arrest those responsible. Hospital officials later confirmed that Dr Malik’s condition is stable.
The hospital urged the public to respect the privacy of the doctor and his family and avoid spreading unverified information, adding that updates would be shared through official channels only.
