ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Day is being observed across the country today (Monday) with traditional zeal but under a broad austerity policy, as the government opted for simple flag-hoisting ceremonies instead of the customary military parade and elaborate celebrations.
The day began with a 21-gun salute in the federal and provincial capitals, followed by prayers for national security and prosperity. Flag-hoisting ceremonies are being held at official buildings and institutions, though in a markedly restrained manner.
On March 17, it may be recalled, the federal government had announced cancellation of the Pakistan Day parade and related ceremonies scheduled for March 23, citing economic compulsions and the need to align national observances with austerity measures. Officials said the decision was taken in the context of the Gulf oil crisis and the government’s broader drive to curtail non-essential expenditure.
“All ministries, divisions and departments have been directed to celebrate the occasion in a simple and dignified manner so that the importance of the day and its true message could be maintained despite limited celebrations,” the announcement stated.
It is generally believed that the austerity drive reflects the government’s attempt to balance symbolic national pride with pressing economic realities, as the rising energy costs, fiscal constraints, and the need to prioritize essential spending have compelled authorities to scale down public ceremonies.
Analysts note that the cancellation of the parade underscores the seriousness of the economic situation, as even high-profile national events are being reshaped to reflect financial discipline.
Despite the scaled-back commemorations, officials emphasized that the spirit of Pakistan Day remains intact. The day commemorates the Lahore Resolution of 1940, which laid the foundation for the creation of Pakistan, and is traditionally marked with displays of unity and patriotism. Citizens across the country are expected to participate in local flag-hoisting events, cultural programs, and prayers, keeping the focus on the ideals of dignity, resilience, and national solidarity.
