Zohran Mamdani, described as New York’s first Muslim mayor, has established a new mayoral office dedicated to LGBTQIA affairs and appointed Taylor Brown as its first director, a move that has reportedly surprised some of his Muslim supporters.
Brown, a human rights lawyer, identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community and describes themselves as a trans woman.
According to the mayor’s office, the new department aims to address the issues and rights of individuals belonging to sexual minorities, including gay and transgender communities, across the city.
The office will work to highlight LGBTQ community concerns in municipal policies, improve access to public services, and support initiatives aimed at preventing discrimination.
