The government of Spain has recalled its ambassador from Israel, a move confirmed in the official government gazette published on Wednesday.
According to an international news agency, sources in Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain said that Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will now operate under the leadership of a chargé d’affaires.
Spain established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1986, although ties between the two countries have often remained tense.
Madrid has strongly opposed Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, as well as the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
A day earlier, Spain’s foreign minister stated that relations between Spain and the United States remain normal despite threats of trade sanctions from Donald Trump over Spain’s opposition to the war against Iran.
Last week, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared the war against Iran illegal and opposed it. Spain also prevented US aircraft from using joint military bases in southern Spain for operations related to the conflict with Iran.
