Pakistan’s federal government is preparing to launch a new digital marketplace designed to link small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with buyers around the world, in a bid to expand exports and strengthen the global presence of local businesses.
The platform, being developed by the Ministry of Industries and Production, will enable Pakistani SMEs to display and sell their products directly to international customers, according to a report by The News International.
The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting on digital transformation in the SME sector, chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan.
Officials said the portal will be inspired by major global e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba Group and AliExpress, offering similar tools to help Pakistani businesses reach international markets more easily.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to digitise the SME sector and boost its role in exports under the economic agenda of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The meeting was also attended by Industries Secretary Saif Anjum, SMEDA Chief Executive Officer Nadia J Seth, and members of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority board, who discussed ways to strengthen SMEs through digital tools and improved access to global markets.
